Logging and development are once again forbidden in the largest forest in U.S.
The U.S. Forest Service recently finalized the restoration of protections for the Tongass National Forest, enforcing a policy against road development or timber harvesting in the area. The Tongass National Forest, located in Alaska, is America’s largest forest, and one of the only places where there is still untouched old growth forest in the country.
Protections for the forest have been scaled back and reinforced according to administration partisanship since 2001, though environmentalists hope that Congress can make these protections more permanent for the sake of America’s carbon footprint.
“As our nation’s largest national forest and the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world, the Tongass National Forest is key to conserving biodiversity and addressing the climate crisis,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said.
